Jefferson & Sul Ross, while Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District (S.C.U.C. I.S.D) included Briscoe, Ray D. Corbett, & J. Frank Dobie junior high schools. Administrator Adriana Heard oversaw the logistics for the contest for N.I.S.D & administrator Cassie Allen was the point person for S.C.U.C.I.S.D. One last courier was about leave the Alamo & the students were to write a final letter to their family; the author of the letter had to be a real Alamo defender ( Crockett, Travis, Bowie & Bonham were excluded ). Our goal was for the students to get as close to “feeling“ what these men & women were going through, so they could truly understand their sacrifice. Another goal was to bring attention to the often-overlooked Alamo Defenders, whose struggles were just as important as the more popular heroes . Along with historical accuracy, the letters were judged by their creativeness; how well did they reproduce the hardships, sounds, smells & emotions that must have overwhelmed the Alamo compound almost 200 years ago. Twenty students received “Top Twenty“ certificates while the remaining ten through one were awarded individually numbered & designed certificate After the ceremony was complete, each school that accurately followed the pre-set guidelines for the contest received a check from The Alamo Chapter to support Texas History in their respected School districts. Palisades Ceremony, Alamo Plaza, Dec 17th
A key location of the 1836 Battle of the Alamo, where it is believed that David Crockett fought, has been re-created in Alamo Plaza. The Palisade Exhibit, a large cedar fortification that surrounds a four-pounder bronze cannon replica, was unveiled Friday evening with pomp, circumstance, and musket firing.
While no photos exist from the time of the battle, researchers were able to piece together what the palisade may have looked like from archival maps and archeological reports, Kristi Nichols, the Alamo’s director of archaeology, collections and historical research, told the San Antonio Report. The palisade is not a replica of the fortification, Nichols emphasized. “It’s just an interpretation to give people the idea of where this was, an idea of the size … and the cannon is there to show how the fortress would have been fortified in arms to help during the Battle of the Alamo.” Most of the Alamo was surrounded by stone walls at the time of the battle, but research shows that the palisade stretched from the southwest corner of the Alamo mission to the walls of the low barrack, which were leveled in 1871.
“Standing here, you gain a new perspective of the overwhelming and terrible odds that those 180 defenders faced,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg told the crowd gathered for the ceremony. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick reiterated his pledge to funnel millions in state funds to support the Alamo Master Plan, which is a result of a partnership among the City of San Antonio, Texas General Land Office, and the Alamo Trust, the site’s nonprofit steward.
“We’re just all Texans when it comes to the Alamo,” Patrick said of the bipartisan effort to preserve the Alamo and redevelop the plaza. “The world knows about the Alamo because it is the symbol of freedom and independence — of people willing to fight for that freedom. And it reverberates around the world.”

According to Alamo historical researcher, Kolbe Lanham, the exhibit sits on the same corner of the original Alamo compound across the church and is in the same location where Alamo Defender Jóse Toribio Losoya was born in. The 18-pounder cannon is the most iconic gun from the Alamo battle and was replicated using five historic photographs and visiting San Pedro Springs Park where the original cannon disappeared from. Researchers also used a military draft card for the dimensions of the cannon. The cannon sits on a carriage that together weigh close to 5,000 pounds. Visitors can go up the stairs of the stone structure to take a picture next to the cannon and see the Alamo through a new lends. “This is the first time anyone (has) stood at that level, next to a cannon of that size in Alamo Plaza in 185 years,” Lanham said. “You’re standing where Alamo Defenders would have stood.”
